RoadWatch Update
U.S. 41 Nokomis Project
Work Week Starting Aug. 17, 2008
(Compiled: Aug. 11, 2008; Revised: )
South of Bird Bay Drive to North of State Road 681 (Venice Connector) –
One lane of U.S. 41 in both directions at different points between
State
Road 681 (Venice Connector) and Bird Bay Drive may be closed intermittently
in evening and off-peak daytime hours, Monday, August 18 through Saturday,
Aug. 23, for construction activities. Work on this week’s schedule that will
not require U.S. 41 lane closures includes installation of the final phase
of the Sarasota County decorative medallion at the U.S. 41/Colonia Lane
intersection; excavation of the Shakett Creek channel; demolition of the old
Dona Bay Bridge; infrastructure construction for the new Shakett Creek and
Dona Bay bridges; installation of light poles and signal structures between
Palm Avenue and SR 681; and pipe cleaning and maintenance project wide.
Due
to work on the medallion, Colonia Lane West is closed where it intersects
with U.S. 41, but can be accessed via Nippino Trail West. Pocono Trail East
and Colonia Lane East are open, but left turns are not permitted onto
southbound U.S. 41 from Colonia Lane East and onto Colonia Lane East from
U.S. 41 southbound. Motorists should go to the traffic signal at Nippino
Trail to make these turns until further notice. Three northbound U.S. 41
travel lanes are open from Bird Bay Drive to the Roberts Bay Bridge and from
Magnolia Avenue to SR 681, and three southbound lanes are open from SR 681
to Palm Avenue and from the Roberts Bay Bridge to Bird Bay Drive. Because of
heavier than usual currents, the U.S. Coast Guard reminds boaters to
exercise extra caution when passing through the channel under the Dona Bay
Bridge.
